As well as what you need to know when having your wedding at Tom Hams Lighthouse. Tom Hams Lighthouse in San Diego, California is a breathtaking venue, with a city style atmosphere that truly makes every wedding unique and memorable.

Now, let's talk about the view. The San Diego skyline view from Tom Hams Lighthouse is simply amazing, a sight that is sure to leave your guests, and your photographs with a lasting impression. It's a scene straight out of a romantic movie, and it's all made possible at this wonderful venue. The view isn't the only thing that makes this place special though. Now lets talk pricing, with views this great hosting a wedding must cost a premium right? Nope, couples spend on average $12,000-$20,000 on Tom Hams Lighthouse weddings. With a ceremony/reception price of $1,000 and per person packages of $80-125 per person leaving you at about ~$8,000 for 50 guests after taxes and fees with the minimum package. Keep in mind that they do have minimum spends that range between 3,000-18,000 depending on the date and time of year. This offers budget friendly options for couples who don't mind an off season wedding. All packages include 6 hours of event time, choice of buffet or plated dinner, tables/chairs/linens and a wedding cake. Being a restaurant they do not have getting ready suites, but like I already mentioned there are plenty of hotels less than a mile away to choose from.

Photo oppurtunities are also great at Tom Hams Lighthouse, I have mentioned the skyline multiple times and that is the most obvious and also easiest. Theres also a view off the deck to the back towards Shelter Island and the harbor. You also can of course go out front of the lighthouse or take a walk on the Harbor Island path. For some greenery you can use the ceremony site with the hedges. Overall Tom Hams Lighthouse is a dream and really has all you could ask for when it comes to a wedding venue. From multiple views, great food and staff, and convenient location and orientation of the day you cant really expect much more.

The ceremony was sweet and simple both putting their heart into their vows. The reception was filled with joy and laughter with a touch of tears from the special dances. Ending off the night with a night session on the streets of downtown.

All with full setup and break down, DJ/Mc services, coordinator, decor and wedding party suites. With also the options of 5 or 6 hours event time, sparklers, an officiant and open bar.

A stolen glance, a shared smile, an intimate connection - a canvas painted with raw emotions, a moment unseen by the audience but felt with unrivaled intensity by the couple. Known as the “First Look” and has taken the wedding industry by storm. Traditionally, the bride and groom have seen each other for the first time as the bride walks down the aisle. Whether or not you should have a first look depends on your preference and the vision you have for your wedding day. In this blog post I will elaborate more on the differences between having a first look or going traditional to help you make the right decision, as well as give tips if you want to do one or go the traditional route.‍First I want to give a brief history of the idea of a first look vs the traditional day. The tradition of the bride and groom seeing each other at the ceremony for the first time came from back when arranged marriages were much more common. They were afraid that the groom would back out and they thought that it would be harder for the groom to back out last minute after the bride is already walking down the aisle rather than if he saw her before. All that to say that it doesn't really matter if you want to or don't want to do a first look because nowadays we choose our partners and you shouldn’t just do a traditional day just because of the word “Tradition”. For the sake of simplicity I will be calling the tradition of the bride and the groom not seeing each other before the ceremony the “traditional day”.‍So, why should you have a first look? You have probably heard this before but the main benefit of a first look is to enjoy more time at your cocktail hour with your guests. Because you will be seeing each other before the ceremony you'll have more time to take photos with your wedding party, family and even each other. This is how I like to structure my first look days, let's also assume this is a single location wedding taking place during the summer.‍2:00 Getting ready groom2:30 Getting ready bride3:00 First Look3:15 Wedding Party3:45 Couple Portraits5:00 Ceremony5:30 Family then go to cocktail hour7:00 Reception7:45 Sunset Session‍VS‍2:00 Getting Ready with groom and groomsmen photos3:00 Getting Ready with bride and bridesmaid photos5:00 Ceremony5:30 Family Photos6:00 Wedding Party Photos6:30 Couple Portraits7:00 Reception7:45 Sunset session‍You also get to be more flexible with your timeline. For example let's assume your first look is 1.5 or 2 hours before the ceremony. You can do wedding party photos right after the first look, then go straight into couples photos and get more variety and locations. You could exchange private vows with each other or end the couple session early and spend more private time with each other. I like to do 15 to 30 minutes with my couples after their first look then 15 minutes again later during sunset.‍Now, how do you go about setting up a first look? First we need a location. As a photographer I prefer to choose the location to get the best photos with the best lighting. However I always ask my couples if they have a location that they prefer. Secondly I always suggest doing the first look privately, just the couple and photo/video. This allows you guys to have your moment together without it being ruined by family or friends (I’ve had my fair share of that happen).‍If you want to relieve the pressure or if you don't like being emotional in front of your family and friends and know that you will be, a first look is a great place to do that without the pressure of the audience and you may even get more genuine reactions from each other. Plus it may help you calm your nerves and alleviate anxiety before the ceremony. Most of the time you get very little alone time on your wedding day and if you would like more time together then consider a first look.‍Now let's talk about why you shouldn't do a first look. The first being it doesn't fit into your schedule, most weddings you can fit a first look into the schedule I find that&nbsp; if your ceremony is in the morning it can be a little bit more tricky.&nbsp; Another reason you may not want to do a first look is because you have to get ready earlier, and due to that your makeup and bouquet won't be as fresh during the ceremony and family photos as well as the sunset session.&nbsp;‍If you guys want to save the special moment of seeing each other for the first time when you walk down the aisle but you like the idea of exchanging private balance with your partner before the ceremony. You could also consider a first touch which won't ruin the surprise before the ceremony. You also don’t just have to limit it to a first look with you and your partner, it is equally as common to have a first look with parents, siblings or with your wedding party.‍If you do want to go with a traditional day timeline and you still want to enjoy some of your cocktail hour I recommend 1 hour and 30 minutes to give you enough buffer, but this means that your cocktail hour will be extra long for your guests. Also remember the time of year, during most of the winter and late fall the sun sets before 5:00 and having a first look will extend time with the Sun. I find in the winter ceremonies start between 2-3 rather than 4-6 throughout the rest of the year.‍Ultimately, the decision to have a first look is a personal one, and I am just here to provide the information with both sides. Communicate with your partner and make a choice that aligns with your vision for your special day.

The golf course is fairly open to you taking photos as long as you aren&rsquo;t in the way of golfers and you get a nice variety of scenery from the ocean in the distance to the Spanish style homes in the background. Of course there is also plenty of Spanish style architecture to choose from!

The Oaks at Duncan Lane - San Diego Wedding Venue

Hey there! If you don't know me I&nbsp;am a wedding photographer based in San Diego and I am making this blog post to share my best tips on how you can make your wedding photos better. As a photographer I feel that it is my responsibility to get my couples the best photos possible in any given situation. However there are things you can do before the wedding and the day of the wedding to make my job easier, achieve better photos overall and save time. Let's talk about them.

Keep the getting ready location clean! Put on your list of things to bring to your wedding day some Windex and paper towels and if they&rsquo;re dirty, give mirrors and windows a wipe the morning of the wedding day. Also don't forget to reserve a spot for your getting ready photos and make sure they are in good light. If you don't know what is good light vs bad the easiest way to do this is to make sure it is close to a window, as long as it is not in direct sunlight you are most likely good. If there's no window a nice bright room will also work in most situations. Most Venues that come with getting ready suites at least in San Diego know this, but it is still something to think about if you are touring venues or places to get ready. Also don't be afraid to move furniture if it's a hotel or an Airbnb to make more space. While we are on the topic of getting ready let's talk about your detail photos. I ask all my couples to put their flatlay details into a box or something that will easily hold everything, If you don't know what flatlays are I&nbsp;will leave some examples below.

Scout your venue, the next time you tour your venue pay attention to the places you want to take photos at. This should be obvious but just keep photo locations is something that might not be thought about. Scout for scenery you like that could make good photo backdrops, such as gardens, architectural details or scenic views. Take note of how the natural light interacts with different areas of the venue at the times of day you plan on taking your photos. If you have a nice backdrop you like but it's in harsh sunlight all day, there may be a better option. I use this app called Sun Seeker, which helps me estimate the position of the sun and determine what time of day a location would be the best option to take photos.

Have a consultation call. This is so important to me that I have it in my contract, in fact you should be doing this with all of your key vendors (DJ, Photographer, Videographer, Planner/Coordinator, Officiant, Florist) During this call you should be going over at least the timeline, making sure your photographer has enough time in each part of the day most notably during getting ready and the family, wedding party, and portraits sections. Speaking of family, make sure you make a family photos list, and if you want to take this a step further ( which I also ask for) assign someone at your wedding to help with the family photos. Normally someone good for this role is someone who knows most people but isn't in all of the shots.

Do an engagement session. Besides weddings, engagement sessions are my favorite sessions, they are optional, but I highly recommend doing one. Not only do you get to go out, have fun and get to know your photographer, but this is also a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and do your trial hair and makeup. If you can't or don't want to do an engagement session, at least practice posing with your partner. Look up poses on Pinterest, Instagram, etc and mimic them in your house or with a friend on their phone. In my behind the scenes videos on my YouTube channel I teach people how to pose, but get creative.

Schedule a sunset session. This one should speak for itself, please! If there is one thing that you want to have on your wedding day related to photography, it's a sunset session. One hour from Sunset is what us photographers call golden hour Simply because it is the best time to take photos throughout the day (otherwise sunrise). Most of the time I find that my favorite images from the wedding are from the sunset session. Keep in mind that if your venue is in the mountains the sun may fall behind the mountains before the sunset time, so be aware of that. Schedule 15-20 minutes within 1 hour from sunset to take portraits and trust me, you won't regret it.

In conclusion if you take your time to set yourself up for success it will go a long way. As a photographer I do as much of these the day of but at a point I can only do so much without sacrificing time. I get super excited when I show up to a wedding day and a couple has taken the time to plan and does even two or three things that I mentioned here. These thoughtful preparations collectively contribute to a smoother photography experience and enhance the overall quality of wedding photos. An engagement session is a wonderful opportunity to capture the love and connection between couples before they tie the knot. I personally love doing engagement sessions for couples because it gives me a chance to get to know you and have some fun before the wedding. Here are some tips to make your engagement session a success.

About the Session: Like I said I love doing engagement sessions, it gives me a chance to get to know you and your personalities. It's also a chance to have some professional quality photos that are outside of your wedding attire. These are also great for Save the Date and/or invitations and just sharing with family and friends. My posing style is very laid back and natural as most of the time I am working with regular people and not professional models. During engagement sessions I generally like to walk around to get a variety of locations.

Location: I like to let you choose your location! If you need Ideas I have my favorites and I&rsquo;m more than happy to help find a place that fits the style you&rsquo;re looking for! Do some brainstorming and think about the places that mean something to you and your partner, what types of locations you like.&nbsp; Here are some of my favorite locations.

The options really are limited to your imagination with your engagement session. It doesn&rsquo;t have to be a scenic location and could just be your favorite bar, coffee shop, or library. Just remember to check to see if you need any permits or to ask the owner of the place if you want to use their coffee shop/bar most. In my experience most of the time most places are cool with it but it's better to not have surprises!

Scheduling: I schedule about 1 to 1.5 hours for an engagement session, typically in the evening with my preference being a little more than an hour before sunset. You get the best natural light during this time, you may have heard us photographers call it &ldquo;golden hour&rdquo;. I also suggest trying to schedule on a weekday as it's less busy in most places, this allows us to be more mobile and also leaves less people in the background.

What to Wear: I&rsquo;m flexible with whatever you&rsquo;d like to wear, this is your session and you should wear what you&rsquo;re comfortable in. I recommend no more than two outfits in order to maximize our time together. Most couples tend to go with a button up shirt or polo, and a dress or skirt, the only thing for me is shoes, since I do like to walk around I recommend comfortable shoes for walking. This is also a good time to mention that you could even bring other things that mean something to you in your relationship like pets or other personal items.

Remember, the goal of an engagement session is to capture the unique love story between you and your partner. There are no rules so don't be afraid to let your personalities shine through!
